Coaching individuals across industries and executive levels, I have been privy to the obstacles that keep people from having the satisfaction they deserve from their work and life. Here are the 10 most common dilemmas that my clients have brought me over the years and my suggestions on how to deal with them. If you recognize yourself, you’ve taken the first step in a good direction.
1. Mid-Career and Feeling Stuck
Are you feeling hopeless and disgusted with your job? Does it seem like there is no way out? You’ve let unacceptable things fly for too long. Write down all your complaints. This is what has been draining you and keeping you stuck. Brainstorm possible solutions with trusted friends and get into action.
2. On an Endless Treadmill headed for Burnout
Is the pressure never-ending? Do you feel like there is never enough time? Do you fantasize about ditching it all for a hut in the Caribbean?
If you do, you’re not alone. Maybe it’s time to join the hundreds of others who have found how to become even more successful with less effort. You are not what you do. Find someone who has a life and beg them to teach you how, NOW!
3. Having It All, but Really Wanting Something Else
Are you ashamed to wish for something more when you have it all already? Do people think you’re crazy for not being 100% satisfied with what appears to be the perfect life?
You’re entitled to your dreams. Figure out whether you have to change careers entirely, or if there is room to put a dash of the dream into what you do now. So, if you dream of writing the great novel, where could writing fit into your current job as a way to get started?
4. Caught in Survival Mode
Are you wondering if what you’re doing is all there will ever be for you? Are you doing the bare minimum to get by? Is there no fun left in what you do?
You’re thinking too small. Thinking bigger will move you from ‘survive’ to ‘thrive.’ Jolt yourself back into life by choosing a goal bigger than you think you could possibly achieve.
5. New at Entrepreneurship
Is having your own business more complicated that you thought? Are you sure that every customer will be your last? Are you overwhelmed by how much there is to do?
A few good systems and a hard look at what you can delegate to others will start you on the road to manageable entrepreneurial success. Next, will come gaining the courage to deal with only ideal customers. It’s time to raise your standards to reach the success you crave.
6. The Ups and Downs of Sales
Do your moods reflect your sales figures? Does everything rest on making the sale?
Whether you’re in your own business or selling for someone else, needing the sale is one of the toughest ways to make one. Getting your personal needs met outside the sales relationship, and doing whatever it takes to have more customers than you need, will let you be detached from your results and more likely to make the sale.
7. Overqualified and Under-utilized
Are you not being recognized for all you can do? Are you overlooked for every project that could mean something to your advancement? Do you feel like you’re the only one who knows what’s going on, and yet no one can appreciate that?
Perception is reality. We will need to change others’ perception of you, and quick. It will take some shifts on your part to become a collaborator instead of a competitor, someone who can lead by example rather than wait for the approval of others.
8. The Hero Syndrome
Are you the one everyone comes to when they have a problem? Are you counted on to save the day? Do you love to feel needed but often find yourself overwhelmed?
You’ll have to let go and teach people how to solve their own problems. Instead of getting your needs met by being the hero, you’ll get kudos by becoming a keen teacher, an empowerer and model for others.
9. Banking on a Miracle
Do you have big ideas that never seem to get realized? Are you banking on something big to happen to bail you out of a bad situation? Do you have a dream project that never seems to get off the back burner?
It’s time to tell the truth, and it may hurt. Not to worry, once the truth is out, you’ll have no other choice but to take action. Get real, get your life to work and build a strong foundation to support you. Miracles occur only when you take responsibility for the mess you have created.
10. Elusive Self-Discipline
Wondering why you know what to do, but just can’t seem to get yourself to do it? Are you envious of people who can discipline themselves to great results?
Stop using discipline as an excuse for beating yourself up and you’ll see greater results for yourself, too. Stop trying to change what you do and instead make changes to who you are. If you can’t make yourself do something, maybe you don’t really want it. Find the part that you DO want to do and do that.
To work through these dilemmas, action is required. Get support and don’t give up.
